What is a Child Theme?

A child theme is a replica of the parent theme. It enables you to change the overall functionality and style of your website without replacing the original parent theme codebase.

Create the child themes using HubSpot CLI and Design Tools. But remember you can use only five child themes if you are having CMS Hub Professional or Marketing Hub Professional. Also, if you want to use more child themes- you should have CMS Hub Enterprise or Marketing Hub Enterprise. With them, you can use upto ten child themes.

How to Create a Child Theme?

Design Manager also lets you create a child theme. You can create a copy of the purchased theme- based on the default HubSpot theme or purchased Asset Marketplace theme.

The child themes can be created based on the custom themes or using the CLI.

In order to create the child theme:

  • Navigate to Marketing>Files and Templates>Design Tools.
  • Then, right click on the theme folder and select Create child theme.
  • Enter a name for the child theme in the dialog box.
  • Click change in the File Location section for changing the place where the child theme will be saved. Click on the folder, then click select.
  • Enter a name for the child theme in the dialog box.

  • Click Change in the File location section in order to change the place where the child theme will be saved.
  • Click a folder, then click select.
  • Then, click Advanced options to customize the names of theme’s JS and CSS files. Then, enter the file names in JS and CSS fields.
  • Click create child theme to finish the entire process. Go to the content editor for editing the styling for the child theme.

How to Create a Page Using a theme?

Go to your content:

  • Landing Pages- From your HubSpot’s account, navigate to Marketing > Landing pages.
  • Website Pages- From your HubSpot’s account, navigate to Marketing > Website > Landing Pages.
  • Press the Create dropdown menu(top right) and choose Landing page or Website page.
  • Enter your page name in the dialog box and click the Create page option.
  • Click on template option from template selection screen. You will be able to view templates from your active theme in the Theme templates section.
  • For previewing a selected template, click Preview(top right) or choose Select template to continue to the content editor.
  • If you want to edit the page content go to the content editor and use drag and drop editor.
  • To set your pages live, simply click the Publish or Update.

How to Apply a Theme Template to Your Blog?

To use the same pages theme as your pages, you can set a blog through your blog settings. The blog listing page and the blog post templates are selected separately.

Following are the steps to perform it:

  • Click the settings icon(main navigation bar) in your HubSpot’s account.
  • Then, navigate to Website>Blog in the left sidebar menu.
  • Click the Select a blog to modify the dropdown menu if you are having multiple blogs.
  • Press the Templates tab.
  • Click the Actions dropdown menu from the blog post and blog listing sections. Select Change Template.
  • Select your theme on the theme selection screen. Then, select a template using that theme. Click Done(bottom right).
  • After your blog post and blog listing page templates have been set, click Save(from the left bottom).
